Mzimba, Malawi.
Ungweru Organization, in collaboration with Misean Cara, has secured approval for its new project, “Improving Income, Food, and Nutrition Security through Sustainable Agriculture,” aimed at transforming the agricultural landscape in Traditional Authority Mabilabo, Chindi, and Jalavikuwa. The project, set for implementation from 2024-2027, was presented during the District Agriculture Extension Coordinating Committee (DAECC) meeting in Mzimba, where the committee greenlit its commencement.
The new project follows the success of Ungweru’s previous project, “High-Value Crops for Sustainable Income and Food Security,” which was implemented in the EPAs of Mbawa, Mjinge, and Manyamula within Traditional Authority M’mbelwa. The project made a notable impact, enabling local communities to access new markets through cooperative development, increasing household income, and improving food security.
In presenting the upcoming project, Ungweru’s Executive Director Samuel Phiri emphasized the organization’s dedication to sustainable development through agriculture, with a focus on enhancing food and nutrition security. The Programs Manager Noel Daire Kumwenda then outlined the strategic approach of the new project, which will commence in Mabilabo, with Emfeni and Luberezi EPAs being considered as potential sites for initial implementation. Luberezi is favored for its reliable water resources, which are essential for irrigation.
During the meeting, questions were raised regarding adherence to animal distribution policies, particularly in relation to the planned livestock pass-down initiative. The Ungweru team assured officials that these concerns would be addressed in collaboration with the technical committee to ensure compliance and smooth project execution.
The DAECC officials gave unanimous approval for the project, highlighting the importance of close collaboration between Ungweru and the technical committee. Officials recommended that the organization maintain open communication throughout the implementation phase to address any technical challenges.
Ungweru Organization expressed gratitude for the support from the DAECC and is set to move forward with the first phase of the project in 2024. This project marks another significant step in Ungweru’s ongoing efforts to empower rural communities in Malawi through innovative and sustainable agricultural solutions.
