Call for Consultancy for Capacity Strengthening of Board Members and Senior Management Team Ungweru Organisation – IMPACT Project (CSSF Supported)-Deadline 26/07/2026

1. Background
Ungweru Organisation is a Malawian non-governmental organization committed to advancing inclusive community development through strengthened governance systems, active citizen participation, and enhanced accountability mechanisms. This is done through the five thematic areas which are education and youth development, Health and wellbeing, Food and nutrition security, Human rights and good governance and Environmental Justice. The organization works closely with local communities, government institutions, and other stakeholders to promote transparency, responsive leadership and sustainable development outcomes.
Ungweru’s programming focuses on building institutional capacity, empowering communities to demand accountability, and facilitating participatory development processes that ensure marginalized and vulnerable groups are not left behind. Through its interventions, the organization seeks to bridge gaps between citizens and duty bearers while strengthening governance structures at both community and institutional levels.
Under the Improving Monitoring, Programming and Accountability for Community Transformation (IMPACT) Project, supported by the Tilitonse Foundation through the Civil Society Strengthening Fund (CSSF), Ungweru is implementing targeted initiatives aimed at improving internal systems, strengthening leadership structures and enhancing organizational effectiveness.
To support these efforts, Ungweru intends to engage a qualified consultant to build the capacity of its Board Members and Senior Management Team in key areas of corporate governance, leadership, communication and succession planning.

2. Purpose of the Consultancy
The overall purpose of this consultancy is to strengthen Ungweru Organisation’s institutional effectiveness by:
• Enhancing corporate governance practices among Board Members;
• Strengthening strategic leadership, communication, and management systems within the Senior Management Team; and
• Developing a structured succession planning framework to ensure sustainability and continuity of leadership.

3. Objectives
The consultancy will specifically aim to achieve the following objectives:
a) Board Capacity Strengthening
• Strengthen understanding of corporate governance principles and best practices;
• Clarify roles and responsibilities of the Board in relation to Management;
• Enhance oversight functions, including financial stewardship and risk management;
• Promote ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability.
b) Senior Management Capacity Strengthening
• Improve internal communication systems and coordination mechanisms;
• Strengthen leadership and management competencies;
• Build capacity in strategic thinking and decision-making;
• Develop and institutionalize a succession planning framework.

4. Scope of Work
The consultant will undertake the following tasks:
a) Inception Phase
• Conduct a brief review of Ungweru’s existing governance and management structures;
• Engage key stakeholders to refine training needs;
• Develop and submit an inception report detailing methodology, work plan, and training approach.
b) Board Training (3 Days)
Facilitate a structured training covering:
• Principles of corporate governance in non-profit organizations;
• Roles and responsibilities of the Board versus Management;
• Financial oversight, internal controls, and risk management;
• Strategic leadership and policy guidance;
• Ethics, integrity, and accountability in governance.
c) Senior Management Training (3 days )
Deliver targeted training sessions focusing on:
• Effective communication strategies and internal coordination;
• Leadership development and team management;
• Strategic planning and performance management;
• Succession planning and organizational sustainability.
d) Reporting
• Prepare and submit a comprehensive final report capturing methodology, key outputs, outcomes, and recommendations.

5. Deliverables
The consultant will be expected to deliver the following outputs:
• Inception Report (including methodology and work plan);
• Training manuals and presentation materials;
• Facilitated Board and Senior Management training sessions;
• Final Consultancy Report (including recommendations and evaluation of training outcomes).

6. Duration and Level of Effort
The consultancy is expected to be completed within 6-8 working days, distributed across preparation, training delivery, and reporting phases.

7. Reporting and Coordination
The consultant will report directly to the Executive Director of Ungweru Organisation. Regular coordination will be required to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and expectations.

8. Required Qualifications and Experience
The consultant (or consulting firm) should possess:
• A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Governance, Public Administration, Business Administration, Development Studies, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred);
• At least 5–10 years of demonstrated experience in institutional capacity building, corporate governance, and leadership training;
• Proven experience working with civil society organizations or non-profit institutions;
• Strong facilitation, communication, and report writing skills;
• Demonstrated ability to develop practical frameworks and tools for organizational strengthening.
