On 11th September 2025, Ungweru Organisation, through its Community Programs Unit, distributed pigs and chickens as part of a livestock pass-on intervention at Mtende Community in Mzimba.
The activity, under the Income, Nutrition and Food Security Project, provided 64 pigs and 420 chickens to 74 project participants. Each participant received either two pigs or ten chickens.
As the intervention follows a pass-on model, participants are expected to share some of the offspring from the livestock with other members who did not receive any during the distribution. This approach aims to ensure that the entire community eventually has access to livestock for building their livelihoods.
One of the participants, Kaphuta Chimaliro, expressed hope that pig farming would help him improve his home.
“If these pigs are well cared for and I sell some of the piglets, I will be able to build a roof for my house,” said Kaphuta.

Another participant, Chrissy Chirwa, highlighted how the initiative would support her child’s education.
“The income I will generate through pig farming will enable me to pay school fees for my child,” she said.

According to Noel Kumwenda, Programs Manager for Ungweru, the intervention is crucial in achieving two of the project’s outcomes: improved income, and improved nutrition and food security.

The initiative was made possible with funding from Misean Cara.
