On Friday, July 12th, Ungweru Organisation collaborated with students from Mzuzu University for a successful clean-up drive aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and responsible waste management. The event, which takes place every second Friday of the month, drew participation from two student societies: the Society of Forestry and Environmental Management (SFEM) and the Society of Water and Sanitation Scientists (SWASS).

A total of 80 students joined the initiative—17 from SFEM and 63 from SWASS—demonstrating the growing commitment among young people to environmental action. Before the clean-up, Ungweru’s Programs Manager, Mr. Noel Kumwenda, engaged the students in an informative session where he shared Ungweru’s mission and the thematic areas the organisation focuses on, particularly environmental sustainability.

Student leaders Marley Chaoneka (SFEM) and Shealtiel Majawa (SWASS) also took the floor to emphasize the role of their respective societies in driving change on campus and in the surrounding communities. The engagement sparked meaningful discussions, particularly around plastic waste management and the importance of recycling in reducing environmental degradation.

The team then proceeded to collect plastic waste and compostable materials in and around Mzuzu University. The plastic waste will be processed through Ungweru’s plastic shredding machine and repurposed into eco-friendly products such as bricks, while the compostable waste will be converted into organic manure to support sustainable agriculture.
