In its pursuit of enhancing the livelihoods of community members in Doroba, Ungweru Organisation, today, on the 19th of September, 2024, has handed over a storage facility to the community of Doroba in Mzimba.
The Storage facility has been constructed with the aim of housing farm produce, and to act as a site of marketing the farm produce derived form the harvests of the community.
According to Noel Kumwenda, who is the project manager at Ungweru Organisation, results from a survey conducted in Doroba had established the need for a storage facility in the community.
“we conducted a survey and the results had shown that people in Doroba who are currently engaged in irrigation farming with the pumps we provided shall need a storage facility once they make their harvests. The storage facility shall enable them to store the harvest but shall act as a site of selling their harvest” said Noel.
It important to note that even though the storage facility has been constructed, it falls to the community to ensure its longevity. In this line of thought, the Senior Village Headman, Dika Mhlanga, had stressed the importance of taking good care of the storage facility.
“It is not only us who will benefit from this storage facility. We have to undertake the responsibility of taking care of the storage facility to ensure our children and our grandchildren also benefit from the storage facility”
Mhlanga also mentioned that chiefs should spearhead the development of their designated areas.
“If someone has helped you, it means he/she has seen a need. Let us work hard by ensuring that we are the forefront in utilizing the storage facility by farming with high intensity”, said Mhlanga.
Also present at the community was Cecilia Kadzongo who is an agriculture extension officer from the ministry of agriculture. Cecilia had urged the community to take the storage facility as their own property. According to Cecilia, Ungweru Organization, by handing over the storage facility to the community, portrays that the facility is not Ungweru’s but theirs.
Ungweru Organization has constructed the storage facility with funding from Misean Cara. The storage facility is amongst the interventions implemented by Ungweru Organization in Doroba with the aim of enhancing the livelihoods of the community.
