On August 9 2024, Ungweru Organisation, in partnership with students from Mzuzu University in the department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences (SFEM), spearheaded a significant clean-up drive around their premises and behind the university. This initiative, which saw participation from over 30 students and team members from Ungweru Organisation, was focused on removing plastic waste from the environment. The collected plastics are sent to St. Peter’s Cathedral in Mzuzu, where they are processed using a shredding machine. The resulting powdered plastic is then mixed with cement to produce eco-friendly bricks.
This clean-up drive is part of Ungweru Organisation’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. Conducted every second Friday of the month, this effort complements Mzuzu City Council’s own monthly clean-up initiative, showcasing a unified commitment to preserving the environment.
