Following the presentation of the food security project at Mtende Village, project participants in the village affirmed their active participation in our project titled “Improving Income, Nutrition and Food Security through Sustainable Agriculture” funded by Misean Cara. The project, which is in its second phase, will install a solar-powered irrigation system in the community, provide livestock to the participants, and establish a cooperative to improve market access for the participants’ agricultural produce.
Speaking at the presentation, our field officer, Lawrencia Tembo, stated the need for participants to show their commitment to the project through their active participation.
“The support of inputs which has been provided by our donor shall require that you show active participation on your part. You need to be committed to the cause. You need to work hard in the field and utilize the irrigation facilities to ensure you produce enough food for your improved income and food security. You need to construct reliable pens which can house the livestock you will be given. This will ensure that you fully reap the benefits of the project”, said Lawrencia.

Project participants present at the presentation assured the Ungweru team and government representatives present of their commitment to the project.
“We will work hard in the fields. We will be present on time when we are needed for project activities. We assure the team from Ungweru, their donors, and the government that we will construct standard pens to house the livestock provided to us”, said Dorola Ngwira, who is the Chief of the village.

Millness Ngulube expressed gratitude to Ungweru and its donors for bringing the project to their area. According to Millness, the initiative was timely as they had received insufficient rainfall due to climate shocks, which affected their food production.
“The solar-powered irrigation will ensure that we reduce our dependency on rain-fed agriculture. The provision of a consistent water supply by the irrigation system will enable us to produce more food, hence combating hunger in our area,” said Millness.

With the combined support of Ungweru, its partners, and the community’s determination, Mtende Village is poised to become a model of sustainable agriculture and resilience in the face of climate change.
