The Youth Development Unit (YDU) of Ungweru Organisation, through its SELL Programme, conducted a series of impactful workshops and outreach activities in May 2025, focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), justice education, and mentorship across multiple communities in Mzuzu and Nkhata-Bay.
Chibavi Sexual and Reproductive Health Workshop
On May 10th, the SRH Coordinator, Patricia, led an engaging SRH workshop for youth aged 16–24 at St. Benadette Hall in Chibavi, Mzuzu. The session covered crucial topics such as physical and emotional changes during adolescence, prevention of cervical cancer and STIs, and sexual and reproductive rights. With support from youth leaders, the workshop successfully equipped participants with essential knowledge for healthy decision-making.

Justice Workshops in Mzambazi and Mpherembe
From May 16th to 18th, Ungweru’s Resource Team and mentors conducted a step-down workshop on Justice in Mzambazi and Mpherembe communities, empowering local youth with knowledge on fairness, rights, and community advocacy.

Wisdom of Traditions Workshop in Msuli
On May 17th, SELL mentor Deborah Phiri facilitated a Wisdom of Traditions workshop at Msuli Anglican Community in Nkhata-Bay, guiding participants on the importance of cultural heritage and values in personal development.
SRH School Outreach Program
Throughout May, the SRH Coordinator, alongside the Ungweru Programs Manager and our intern Elizabeth, conducted school outreaches focusing on Empathy Building to address myths and stigma around menstruation and wet dreams. Sessions were held at:
- Chris Academy (May 20th) – Engaging Form 1 and 2 students in open discussions.
- Luwinga and Zolozolo Secondary Schools (May 21st) – Reinforcing awareness and respect for natural body changes.
- Zolozolo Secondary School (May 27th) – Additional sessions with another stream of Form 1 students.
- Chibavi Secondary School (May 28th) – Extending SRH education to more learners.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day Participation
On May 28th, the SRH Coordinator attended a webinar organized by Girls Empowerment Network, themed “Together for a Period-Friendly World: Ending Period Poverty Through Awareness, Access, and Advocacy.” The insights gained will enhance Ungweru’s SRH programming.
Catechist Training in Nkhata-Bay
The same day, Ungweru introduced the SELL Programme to 76 catechists in Nkhata-Bay, expanding its reach to faith-based educators who play a key role in youth mentorship.

4th Mentor’s Training
From May 29th to June 1st, the Resource Team conducted the 4th Mentor’s Training at Ungweru’s premises. Mentors reflected on their journeys, shared experiences, and were equipped with skills in Safeguarding, SRH, and sustainable practices like recycling notebook paper to better serve their communities.

A Month of Empowerment and Growth
May 2025 was a month of education, advocacy, and community engagement for Ungweru’s YDU. Through workshops, school outreaches, and mentorship training, the organisation continues to foster youth development, health awareness, and social justice across Malawi.
